Digital Reduction: backstory
In an effort to share some of the aesthetic theories behind my Digital Reduction series, I’ll occasionally post a bit of art history for your consideration.
This is a work by Robert Rauschenberg titled ‘Erased de Kooning’. In short, as a you g artist, he asked de Kooning for a drawing he could erase. The rest is artistic history.
One question that my series raises is the issue of the impermanence of digital work. Can it truly be destroyed? Or is it merely altered?
Either way, this interview with Rauschenberg is fascinating.
