New American Painting -Process of a Painting with Jeffrey Deane Hall

Working with iconic images to unite similar subject matter, painter Jeffrey Deane Hall (NAP# 100) combines mathematical and painterly techniques to merge media and themes together.  His paintings are a mix of assemblage and collage and they have an architectural and puzzle-like aesthetic.

Sorry I haven’t been posting my Captcha 22’s this week. I’ve been working on finishing this painting for a critique tonight.

Bonus points if you can spot the two hidden paintings and decipher the meaning of the title.

My painting process on this work will be shown soon on the New American Painting blog. Stay tuned!

And thanks for reblogging! You guys are amazing!

Sorry I haven’t posted any Captcha 22’s this week. I’ve been working hard on finishing this painting. This is the style of work I generally create. (Yes, everything in this piece is painted, including the wooden background.)

Bonus points if you can name the two hidden paintings and can decipher the meaning of the title.

Thanks for reblogging. Your support is amazing!

“You’re only human”

CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. I thought I’d make This my second quote in the series because its what we say to each other to acknowledge the fact that all humanity is flawed and prone to mistakes. Again, ironically, it is this ability to see past the mistakes that makes us human too.

This wraps up the first of the “captcha 22” series. I like how the images are developing, but the lack of feedback suggests folks like more powerful words. I’ll see what I can do.

The idea of this series centers around the fact that there is so much communication today, yet so little understanding.

Whether the political rhetoric instead of discourse, the meaningless minutiae of social media posts, or the disconnect from real friends and family in our lives in favor of virtual connections.

I thought the captcha was a great vehicle for this idea. It represents some of the frustration about how we prove our existence in this digital age, as well as the breakdown in understanding.

In my new project, I will take twenty-two words or phrases and intentionally make them hard to read or understand. I will likely do multiple versions of each to explore visual variations.
It is my hope that by exploring this idea, we might begin to question the role of technology in our relationships and the quality of our interactions.
